ACE Achieves Carbon Emissions Reduction Goal Ahead of Schedule
Dec 17, 2010

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The ACE Group today announced that it achieved its companywide greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction goal, set under the guidelines of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Climate Leaders program, more than two years ahead of the original 2012 target date. The company achieved the goal – to reduce its global GHG emissions by eight percent per employee from 2006 to 2012 – in 2009 based on emissions data collected earlier this year.

The company joined Climate Leaders in 2007 and used the program’s rigorous methodology to complete its 2006 base-year GHG inventory. Based on that data, it then set and publicly announced its reduction target in October 2008. Although the EPA recently announced that it would phase out the Climate Leaders program next year, ACE will continue to track and report on its global GHG emissions annually.

“We’re pleased to have achieved our carbon emissions reduction target earlier than expected,” said Evan G. Greenberg, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of ACE Limited. “ACE is committed to reducing its carbon footprint and controlling its environmental impact, even as we continue to expand our operations around the globe.”

ACE reached its goal through a range of activities, including making energy-efficient lighting upgrades and heating/ventilation/air conditioning improvements in its largest owned and leased facilities, reducing non-essential business travel and optimizing its real estate square footage.

ACE also reports its GHG data, along with an analysis of related climate change risks and opportunities, each year through the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), an independent, not-for-profit organization that gathers and scores primary corporate carbon emissions information from thousands of businesses around the world. The company was recently named by CDP to the 2010 Carbon Performance Leadership Index; ACE was among 48 companies – and one of only three insurance companies – from the world’s 500 largest public companies to earn this recognition. In addition, ACE recently ranked 6th in the banks and insurance sector and 64th overall inNewsweek’s Green Rankings of America’s 500 largest companies.

ACE provides a comprehensive view of its climate change and environment-related activities each year in its Environmental Report, which is available on the “ACE and the Environment” page of its website.
