GLENVIEW, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--As the nation looks to honor our military veterans this weekend, Combined Insurance, a leading provider of individual supplemental accident, disability, health and life insurance products, today announces it has been named a top 10 Military Friendly Employer by G.I. Jobs. Moving to show its continued support in hiring military veterans, Combined Insurance also announces it is committing to hiring 1,000 veterans in 2013.
The G.I. Jobs Military Friendly Employers list is made up of 100 companies that represent the top 2 percent of more than 5,000 eligible companies whose annual revenues exceed $500 million. Criteria included the strength of a company’s military recruiting efforts, the percentage of new hires with prior military service, retention efforts, and the company’s policies toward National Guard and Reserve service. This is the second consecutive year that the company has made the list and its first time in the top 10.
“Making the G.I. Jobs Military Friendly Employer list is recognition that our commitment to hiring military veterans is a serious one,” says Peter Leighton, senior vice president, recruiting at Combined Insurance. “We know that unemployment remains a problem – especially for our military veterans. We believe they can make valuable contributions to our company. They are disciplined and are dedicated to helping others. That’s why we have committed to hiring 1,000 veterans in 2013.”
To help meet that goal, Combined Insurance plans to further leverage its participation in Hiring Our Heroes, the100,000 Jobs Mission, and use of other military recruiting resources such as the Transition Assistance Program (TAP) and Fleet and Family Support Centers, the Veterans Administration, state representatives and other local veteran organizations, as well as military-specific job sites like vetsuccess.gov.
This year alone, Combined Insurance will participate in close to 100 hiring fairs organized by Hiring Our Heroes, a nationwide initiative launched by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s National Chamber Foundation in March of 2011 to help veterans and military spouses find meaningful employment. As a result, it has helped employ hundreds of veterans.
As a member of the 100,000 Jobs Mission, Combined Insurance participates with a coalition of leading U.S. companies whose goal is to hire 100,000 transitioning service members and military vets by 2020. The 100,000 Jobs Mission uses the U.S. Veterans Pipeline, a web portal designed to increase veterans’ chances of finding employment by matching veterans’ military skills with open positions in the corporate sector. As of September 30, 2012, more than 28,000 veterans have been hired by participating companies.
“We believe our military recruiting program is a strong one,” says Leighton. “We have been actively leveraging these resources and so far they have been tremendously successful for us in our recruiting efforts. Being a part of the G.I. Jobs Military Friendly Employers list also gives our military recruiting program added credibility. Next year we plan to do more and I am confident we can achieve our 1,000 military veteran hiring goal.”
