About the Robert Clements Scholarship
Over the past 20 years the Chubb Charitable Foundation – Bermuda, through the Robert Clements Scholarship and other discretionary awards, has invested in excess of $2.5m in support of 24 Bermudians to help them prepare for professional careers in Bermuda’s insurance industry.
The fully-funded four-year scholarship is open to Bermudians studying for an undergraduate or graduate degree in insurance, risk management, actuarial science or other disciplines related to the insurance industry including accounting, law, and economics. The scholarship offers students the opportunity to study for a degree without financial worry as well as employment opportunities during the holidays to provide them with relevant work experience. Recipients must be willing to return to Bermuda on completion of their studies to pursue a career in the insurance industry.
Rebekha Rhiannon Simons is the 2016 Bermuda College Education Award Recipient
Rebekha Rhiannon (“Rhia”) Simons recently graduated from Bermuda College with an Associates of Arts (Art) Degree. She will commence a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology at St. John’s University in Queen’s, New York. Her goal is to become a therapist after returning to Bermuda.
“Between levels of high stress, battling addictions and the breakdown of many family units, Bermuda can benefit immensely from qualified marriage and family therapists and addictions counsellors. I believe in making a valuable contribution to society and creating opportunities for meaningful engagement with others. To be able to educate myself as a supporter and advocate for others regarding their family and personal struggles and to provide an insightful practice that ultimately benefits the clients I serve; that would be a life well lived,” said Rhia Simons.
Ms. Simon’s most impactful experiences include volunteering with The Family Centre where she was given the opportunity to work with middle school students. Her interactions with these youth inspired her, teaching her how to better communicate and understand them. While maintaining an impressive 3.9 cumulative GPA out of a possible 4.0, Rhia has been actively involved in the dance community locally and internationally. She also helped launch and facilitate the Bahai Centre’s youth group, “Young Fire”.
Samantha Froud, Chief Administration Officer, Chubb Bermuda Operations, and a member of the Bermuda College Education Award selection committee said, “The purpose of this award is to provide opportunities to graduates of Bermuda College to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in any field of study, but most importantly in an area for which they are passionate. We are extremely proud to have Rhia as our 2016 Bermuda College Education Award recipient and are confident that she will achieve her goals.”
About the Bermuda College Education Award
The Bermuda College Education Award provides $15,000 a year for two years to the successful Bermuda College graduate to assist them with the continuation of their undergraduate studies overseas. Since inception, nine Bermudian students have benefitted from the Education Award.
The Bermuda College Education Award was launched in 2008 as one component of partnership formed between Chubb and the Bermuda College. The goal of the partnership is to expose students to a business environment and prepare them for a successful career by helping them understand the connection between their studies and the workplace. This is achieved through several initiatives such as mentoring, networking events, and employment opportunities.
