Immerse Yourself in the Serenity of “Chubb Life Forest” at Art Basel Hong Kong 2024
An oasis for connection and reflection on legacy
Mar 20, 2024

HONG KONG, March 20, 2024 – Chubb Life Hong Kong (“Chubb Life HK”) is proud to be an official partner of Art Basel Hong Kong 2024, the largest international art fair in the city, running from March 26 to 30, 2024. As part of its continuous support for the local art community, Chubb Life HK will present the Chubb Life Forest, a space designed to reflect the natural beauty of Hong Kong while exploring the concept of creating a natural setting in which humans and nature exist together harmoniously.

Created in collaboration with professional artist-architects Lily Zhang and Wataru Shinji, the Chubb Life Forest features a captivating walk through a tranquil, green oasis, enabling visitors to explore the powerful connection to nature’s diversity. This is the first time both artists have created an exhibit dedicated to showcasing an abundance of living plants that will endure for future generations, as the plants will be returned to their natural habitat. As part of the immersive experience, Chubb Life HK is partnering with film director Masataka Kiyono to visually project natural scenes of the city onto the forest’s backdrop.

Together with a series of events ranging from canvas painting, an architectural sharing session on the concept of the art installation, to networking sessions with industry professionals at the Chubb Life HK booth, the forest also serves as an interactive hub reflecting the concept of legacy, and Chubb Life’s commitment to caring for and protecting customers when they most need it. To reinforce the concept of legacy, visitors will be invited to select a native tree that Chubb Life HK will plant in the Tao Fung Shan Forest Redesign and Enhancement Project, in collaboration with Lily and Wataru. Post Art Basel, the plants shown at the installation will then be returned to their natural habitat.

Belinda Au, President of Chubb Life Hong Kong and Head of North Asia, said, “Chubb Life is proud to be an official partner of Art Basel Hong Kong 2024, continuing our support of the local art community. We believe in enabling our customers to achieve their life goals and protect what matters to them through a wide range of life protection, savings, accident, and health insurance solutions. The Chubb Life Forest reflects our commitment to caring for and protecting every aspect of life while promoting a sense of community.”

Prior to its participation at Art Basel Hong Kong 2024, Chubb was an official host partner of Art Basel Miami Beach 2023. The company also launched the Chubb Life Art Gallery in Chubb Tower, Hong Kong in December 2023. Designed to function as a premium customer service center, the gallery also serves as a space for creativity and inspiration. It exhibits immersive and interactive artworks created by local and international artists to inspire customers, while showcasing the company’s brand values as a world leading insurer and its ongoing dedication to the global art community.

Appendix: About Tao Fung Shan Forest Redesign and Enhancement Project

Lily and Wataru are designing a new forest and meditation space at the prominent nature and spirituality campus of Tao Fong Shan, a listed Grade 2 Historic site with its own rich legacy recognized by the Hong Kong government’s Antiquities and Monuments Office. This place was originally planted in the 1960s and 1970s, with fast-growing exotic tree species to stabilize the rocky soil condition. These exotic trees are now reaching the end of their expected lifespan of approximately sixty years or are not well-suited to the local climate and have little ecological value in the long term.

Their design proposes to replant and enhance this deteriorating forest with native and localized species as well as nitrogen-fixing woodland ground cover to improve the local ecology and soil condition and create a new outdoor meditation space for spiritual contemplation and deep connection to the surrounding environment. They are designing the new forest with native and localized Hong Kong trees, which act as living beings, part of a larger landscape and ecosystem, situated and rooted as key protagonists in and for the land, creating beautiful scenery that will grow and thrive for generations to come. In collaboration with the Chubb Life Hong Kong Legacy campaign, the project will beautifully capture and integrate the legacy trees selected by the visitors to Chubb Life Forest during Art Basel Hong Kong 2024.
