BANGKOK, November 23, 2020 - Chubb Samaggi Insurance Public Company Limited (Chubb) participated in the company’s annual Regional Day of Service (RDS) by focusing on the theme of Education@Heart. This year, educational sessions were organized to educate lower secondary students from the Teach for Thailand network nationwide, Chubb employees and the general public about the problems plaguing the environment and the effects of plastic waste in particular.

Chubb collaborated with the Teach for Thailand foundation to organize an educational trip for 100 secondary school students (grades 7 to 9) under their network from Prongmadua Wittayakom School, Phattharayan Witthaya School and Pianpinanusorn School. They were accompanied by 100 Chubb volunteers on the visit to Khlong Khon Mangrove Forest Conservation Center in the Thai province of Samut Songkhram.

The students and volunteers learned about environmental and sustainability concepts, the importance of resource efficiency, how to upcycle waste and developed an awareness of the value of natural resources. During the event, participants were divided into groups for an upcycling workshop, where volunteers transformed discarded plastic bottles into new pencil boxes for the students.  The volunteers then tie-dyed old fabric bags with coconut-husk dye before everyone worked together to plant seedlings in the mangrove.

In addition to these activities, Chubb is also taking part in the “Won” (the Thai word for “loop”) project which collects cleaned plastic bags and film to be reproduced and reused, as well as the “Less Plastic” project which recycles used PET bottles into personal protective equipment (PPE) for medical staff.  In support of these two projects, the company will be collecting used plastic items donated by all staff.

Mr. Andrew Nisbet, Country President of Chubb Samaggi Insurance PCL, stated “This year we continue to support and recognize the importance of education while promoting awareness of environmental issues and the effects of plastic waste.  At Chubb, we have organized a special one-day activity so that students have the opportunity to learn outside the classroom. Together with our employee volunteers, they have gained useful knowledge in a fun and interactive way. We also hope to expand our efforts to encourage all students within the Teach for Thailand network to reduce plastic usage. As many students did not get to go on the educational day-trip, Chubb decided to launch an educational scholarship for winners of a drawing contest with the theme of Dream Nature in My Community. The contest was open to all Grade 7 to 9 students from Teach for Thailand’s network, and garnered more than 200 entries. I’m so impressed by the children’s work which reflected a strong appreciation of the natural environment in Thailand.”

A panel of judges have chosen 20 winners who will each receive a 5,000 Thai Baht scholarship. In addition, 5 winners selected by Chubb’s intermediaries, i.e. agents and brokers in the Popular Vote category, will each receive a 1,000 Thai Baht scholarship. These grants worth a total of 105,000 Thai Baht will help the winners with their education.

Chubb sincerely hopes that this activity will help educate more people about the need to reduce waste as well as the benefits of reusing resources, and more importantly, inspire the students to help preserve the environment.
